Billy Bragg is one of the most active and best-loved left-wing protest singers in popular music. He has worked both with and without a backing band (his current backing band is called The Blokes), and his songs have ranged from politically charged protest songs and social observations, to humorous fictional and gentle inquisitive personal love stories. He is a renowned and gifted lyricist. In addition to being a cult hero and a regular at the annual Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival, he has also enjoyed some commercial success, including two albums recorded with the USA alt-country band Wilco, which consisted of a collection of previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics.
