Burt Bacharach is unquestionably one of the most important composers in the history of popular music. He studied musical theory and played in a number of jazz ensembles during the 40s, then after serving in the US Army between 1950 and 1952 he worked with the likes of The Ames Brothers and Vic Damone as a pianist and arranger, and later as a musical director for Marlene Dietrich. In the late 50s Bacharach formed an important partnership with lyricist Hal David. It is with David that Bacharach composed many of his most memorable songs. Dozens of famous artists have turned Bacharach's songs into hits, many of which are still loved and performed today. The sound of a Bacharach song is distinctive and virtually unmistakeable, and his style of songwriting has influenced countless subsequent artists. Now into his 80s, he remains a popular performer in his own right.
