When it emerged at the beginning of the 90s, The Charlatans was at the forefront of a bold new movement in British rock. With its combination of classic rock, dance rhythms and the fuzz guitars and swirling keyboards of 60s psychedelia, it became a flagship band of the Madchester scene. The single The Only One I Know, from the band’s 1990 debut album, became a smash hit in both Europe and the USA. In 1995, well after the scene from which it came had faded away, The Charlatans experienced an amazing rebirth, its self-titled fourth album displaying an updated – but still unmistakably Charlatans – sound that took the band to new commercial heights. Despite the tragic death of keyboardist Rob Collins in 1996, the band continued to produce hit albums through the latter part of the 90s and in to the 00s, and released its 2008 album You Cross My Path as a free download. One of the truly great UK Indie bands of all-time.
