The incorrect pronunciation of Deadmau5's name is something that has exposed non-followers of the electronic music scene for a while. The '5' is to be read as an 's', with 'deadmouse' as the result. Canadian sound alchemist Joel Zimmerman hit upon the name when he found an expired rodent inside his computer. The imagery has served him well. He has created an entire persona for himself that involves rocking his massive-scale DJ gigs wearing a huge Mickey Mouse-style novelty head with oversized ears. Although he started creating music in 2005, in 2008 his rise to the upper echelons of the international DJ community occurred at lightning speed following the release of his Random Album Title LP on Ultra Records. Despite a handful of badly judged disparaging remarks on the art of DJing, Deadmau5 escalated to stadium status like DJ Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold in a remarkably short period of time, and continued into the 10s as one of the most in-demand producers, remixers and performers in the world.
