The undisputed Queen of Pop, Madonna’s ability to consistently stay on top of musical trends has made her one of the most enduringly popular musicians of all time. Born Madonna Louise Ciccone in 1958, she moved from her home state of Michigan to New York in 1977, with the intention of becoming a dancer. However, the music industry soon beckoned, and she had her first hit in 1983 with Holiday, from her self-titled album. The rest of the decade would see Madonna become a global star, releasing countless classic pop tracks, such as Material Girl, Like A Virgin and Papa Don’t Preach. She also quickly became known for pushing the limits of what was acceptable in music, most notably on her video for Like A Prayer, which was condemned for its blasphemous imagery. Throughout the next two decades her prolific recording meant that her material was occasionally met with indifference, but on the whole she has demonstrated a staggering ability to release countless original, evocative, and most importantly catchy tunes, ranging from the bleak gothic-tinged Frozen to the euphoric disco of Hung Up. Madonna has also been involved in acting since the late 70s, her most notable roles being in Desperately Seeking Susan and Evita.
