Paul McCartney enjoyed the most successful post-Beatles' career, although much of his work with Wings, and under his own name, was dismissed as inconsequential fluff by critics for several years, a label partly engendered by the overwhelming success of popular hits like Mull Of Kintyre and The Frog Chorus. In truth this was wide of the mark, for although Macca undoubtedly had a tendency towards the saccharine, for every Silly Love Songs there was a Maybe I'm Amazed. In the 90s, the ever inquisitive McCartney turned his hand to classical composition, while collaborating with edgier talents such as Elvis Costello. His longstanding enthusiasm for electronic music, which dated back to experimental 60's pieces, was reignited via his work with Youth, as The Fireman, issuing two acclaimed ambient electronica albums in the mid-to-late-90s and a third in 2008. Paul has struggled with the ghost of John Lennon and how much he was loved, yet McCartney can claim the jewels now, because he has kept the spirit of the Beatles alive with his superb live performances of an outstanding back catalogue.
