Pioneering alternative rock outfit, R.E.M, was formed in the college town of Athens, Georgia, and the band's thrilling blend of punk thrum, glorious Rickenbacker jangle, and oblique, poetic lyrics won legions of loyal fans throughout the 80s. They also negotiated the often prickly leap from independent to major label status without alienating their fanbase, and by the early-90s had become one of the biggest bands in the world, filling stadiums and topping charts across the planet. Despite inspiring an army of soundalike bands, R.E.M. remained true to their vision, remained unpretentious while constantly evolving their sound, seamlessly integrating folk, electronica, and even hip hop influences without compromising the band's soul, remaining a potent outfit into the new millennium until disbanding in 2011.
