The Fall were at the forefront of the UK post-punk scene in the late 70s, forging one of the most distinctive sounds of the era. The band was also the longest-lived of the original post-punk outfits. The Fall released dozens of albums with a constantly shifting line-up that has included innumerable musicians - many of whom have gone off to work with other important bands - but The Fall always revolved around the brilliant curmudgeon frontman Mark E. Smith. Smith mated the punk attitude and energy of singers like Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer with word-drunk poetry, almost Beatnik-like stream-of-consciousness flow. Smith has had a huge influence on the indie rockers of the 80s and 90s, the band continued to make vital, vibrant music until the tragic death of Smith in January 2018. He was a unique talent.
