Third Eye Blind's roots can be traced back to the early 90s, when Stephen Jenkins formed the band in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the coming years the line-up would go through several changes, leaving Jenkins as the only original member. They built up a strong fanbase, receiving a huge boost when they were asked to open for Oasis in San Francisco, and signed to Elektra records in 1996, following a furious bidding war. They enjoyed instant success, with their first single, Semi-Charmed Life, reaching the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100, and their debut album going on to sell over 6 million in the USA alone. The album was a near flawless collection of punk-edged power pop, which seemed to transcend music tastes and won universal approval from the critics. The album spawned several more hit singles, further swelling sales of their LP. The eagerly anticipated second album was released in 1999, and was met with a great sense of disappointment. The band then embarked on a four-year hiatus, before returning with a new album in 2003. In 2004 they became a victim of a mass cull by their record label. However, after another lengthy break, they returned to form with the excellent new album Ursa Major in 2009.
