Bill Withers is a classy American singer-songwriter and musician who has written and recorded some classic soul/pop songs, which continue to be played on the radio regularly and have been covered countless times. He served in the US Navy for nine years, leaving in 1965 to pursue a music career. Living in Los Angeles, California, he started performing and recording whilst supporting his music with income from various routine day jobs. He even continued to work after his debut single, Ain't No Sunshine, became a number 3 US hit. This classic single was produced by Booker T. Jones, and featured the great Stephen Stills on guitar. The early 70s proved a fruitful time for Withers, who scored several more big hits and released some strong albums. With the exception of the occasional hit, his commercial standing declined into the 80s, and by the mid-80s he had virtually retired from music. He now lives a private life, rarely giving interviews and making very few public appearances.
