A child star in her native Iceland in the 70s, Björk experimented with various arty outlets and eventually stunned the world in the late 80s with her other-worldly singing on the single Birthday, one of a handful of international hits by the excellent indie band The Sugarcubes. She struck out on her own in 1992 and transformed the world of electronica with a unique hybrid of trip-hop, house, art-rock, pop, and jazz, characterized by adventurous lyrical conceits, weird arrangements and most of all, her alternately dissonant and celestial banshee voice. Her impish and loveable personality belies her great intelligence and lyrical talent. Björk has also successfully acted in film roles, and has been nominated for Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe awards, as well as winning Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000.
