Blue Öyster Cult formed in 1967 in Long Island, New York. Much of their work is intelligent heavy metal, similar in style to Black Sabbath. However, their best known song, 1976's (Don't Fear) The Reaper, is a radio-friendly melodic pop rock song, featuring glorious Byrds-like vocal harmonies. The song has achieved classic status, and is still a staple of mainstream daytime radio. They have sold more than 14 million records worldwide, and despite countless line-up changes, they are still going today, albeit primarily as a nostalgia act.
