Much maligned, although it is hard to understand why. They merely took what the Nice did one stage further as Carl Palmer became the songwriter in place of Lee Jackson. The two sides of ELP were adaptations of classical pieces, which usually worked well. On this, ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Toccata’ are given the prog treatment. The longer original suite ‘Karn Evil’ allows Keith Emerson to let loose on his organ and piano. He is astonishingly fluid and imaginative. A wholly successful album, apart from the dreadful Chas And Dave, cor blimey singalonga ELP ‘Benny The Bouncer’. Somebody, at some stage, must have thought it was a good idea.
