Bright Eyes is the best-known and most commercially successful project of prolific singer-songwriter Conor Oberst. Although Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott are the only official additional band members, Bright Eyes has featured a long list of guest musicians, many of whom are well known. The first Bright Eyes release came in 1998, simply titled A Collection Of Songs Written And Recorded 1995-1997, although the next record Letting Off The Happiness was a more accurate showcase of the direction Oberst was going in. His acclaimed 2002 album, often shortened to Lifted, helped raise his profile, and was his first to chart in the Billboard 200. His next move was to release two albums on the same day in 2005, one of which contained acoustic folk-based music in the style of the majority of his previous work, whilst Digital Ash In A Digital Urn was a more experimental, electronic-based set. Both received primarily favourable reviews, although I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, sold better due to its more accessible sound, and reached the USA Top 10. Oberst is a songwriter of considerable talent, and much praise has been directed towards his highly poetic and thoughtful lyrics.
