The youngest in an impoverished Canadian family of 12, Celine Dion was born Céline Marie Claudette Dion in 1968. Raised in French-speaking Quebec, her stunning, staggeringly powerful vocals won her an early start in the music business, winning the Yamaha Popular Song Festival in 1982 and the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988. It was Dion’s 1990 English language debut Unison that introduced her to a wider audience on a more permanent basis. By the end of the decade she had become one of the most successful recording artists of all time, soundtracking Disney’s 1991 adaptation of Beauty And The Beast and reaching huge sales with The Power Of Love, My Heart Will Go On and a host of other iconic singles. In 1999, at the peak of her popularity, the singer took a break from show business in order to spend more time with her husband, who had just been diagnosed with cancer. 2002 saw Dion return with her A New Day Has Come album, which topped up her album sales to around the 200 million mark. The following year saw her begin an intensive five year stretch headlining a nightly Las Vegas theatrical show.
