Alongside Black Sabbath, Deep Purple are the most enduring, and prolific of the original heavy rock bands that emerged from the psychedelic era. Initially powered by the virtuoso riffing of Ritchie Blackmore, and the brilliant mock classical keyboard runs of Jon Lord, the band issued three fine albums with original singer, Rod Evans, before hitting their peak with the addition of Ian Gillan. Gillan's wailing voice allowed the band to up the wattage, and their thunderous new sound set the template for future generations of metal bands.
