Donovan emerged in the mid-60s, with many labelling him as Britain's answer to Bob Dylan. He came to fame via the popular UK music TV show Ready, Steady, Go!, and his performances on this ensured that his 1965 debut single Catch The Wind reached the UK Top 5. He also enjoyed encouraging early success in America. By the following year he had moved with musical trends, progressing from his initial acoustic folk sound towards a rockier, flower-pop sound. With his new sound, he reached the top of the USA singles charts with the now classic Sunshine Superman. He continued to slide from one style into another, and although his popularity had declined dramatically by the end of the 60s, he continued to record prolifically throughout the 70s. Through the 80s and 90s his output was minimal, with most records being reissues, children's albums and USA-only releases. He surprised many in 2004 by returning with a solid new studio album, Beat Café.
