Neil Young’s second solo album introduced his long-standing relationship with backing group Crazy Horse. The partnership allowed the singer greater musical flexibility and the understanding generated gave a unique synergy to his work. The combination could be concise, as on the chunky ‘Cinnamon Girl’, with its unusual timing and changes. The pivotal selections are the lengthy, guitar-based workouts, ‘Down By The River’ and especially ‘Cowgirl In The Sand’. The group urge Young into textured, improvised playing, the appeal of which never palls. Elsewhere, the singer revisits his folk past and embraces country rock and pop, none better than the title track. For many, the best Neil Young album ever.
