Sadly, the long and magnificent career of one of the finest songwriters of our age, Ray Davies, is not truly represented on any one album, other than greatest hits packages. Many Kinks albums have appeared but the absolute five star gem was never made. So many albums, so prolific with the butter spread thinly. This record summed up swinging London in the 60s and like its great successor, Something Else, contained Ray’s observations of ordinary people and situations. The album is strengthened by the classic ‘Sunny Afternoon’ but perceptive tracks such as ‘Fancy’, ‘Dandy’, ‘Session Man’ and ‘Most Exclusive Residence For Sale’ are gentle satires that give the record its heart.
