Florence & The Machine takes the form of band, but is effectively the recording alias for London-based singer and songwriter Florence Welch. She formed the unit in 2007, having played numerous gigs under various names, and quickly began to build a strong local reputation. There was considerable media attention in the build up to the release of her 2009 debut album from music publications such as New Musical Express (NME) and also from the BBC, who aired a number of her early performances. The album was released to wide acclaim and it earned strong sales in the UK, Ireland and Australia. It demonstrated her remarkably powerful and emotive vocals, and her skill and originality as a composer. She is renowned for her outrageous stage dresses. The album Lungs was nominated for the 2009 Mercury Music Prize and Florence & The Machine won the Critics Choice section at the 2009 Brit Awards.
