An exceptional debut that buried the quality of the music behind the attention that focused on lead singer Shirley Manson. She was outspoken and provocative visually and verbally, and the hacks rushed to kneel before her. From the opening ‘Supervixen’, the pace is set; the split-second pauses during this track are a powerful hook and grab the attention of the listener. Heavy and melodic, the band sound like a seasoned unit, bass and drum mixed together brilliantly, and the lead guitar never stealing the show, only complementing Manson’s dusky vocals. Although much of the album utilizes loops and computer technology, the overall sound is that of a real rock band.
