Isaac Hayes was an influential singer with an instantly recognisable, silky sexy baritone voice. Throughout his career he had a significant impact across several genres, and is regarded as one of the leading figures of the southern soul style. He is best known for his contribution to the soundtrack for the 1971 movie Shaft, most notably Theme From Shaft. He also became known to a whole new generation in the late 90s, when he provided the voice to the character Chef in the American TV comedy South Park. He left the show acrimoniously in 2006, following an episode that appeared to criticise the Scientology religion, of which Hayes was a member. In addition to his own work, Hayes actually started his career as a songwriter with David Porter and co-wrote many soul classics including Hold On I'm Coming and Soul Man, I Thank You for Sam & Dave, and B-A-B-Y for Carla Thomas. He suffered a stroke in 2006, and died from a recurrence of the stroke two years later.
