Jefferson Airplane formed in 1965, and were one of the most important bands of the late 60s San Francisco psychedelic rock scene, and the first to achieve mainstream success. They broke into the big time with their 1967 second album, Surrealistic Pillow, a masterpiece that combined folk, rock and psychedelia, and reached number 3 in the USA. They split in 1974, with Paul Kantner and several other members going on to form Jefferson Starship. Jefferson Airplane briefly reformed in 1989 to record a disappointing new album. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996.
