After cutting his teeth in the Back Porch Majority and The Mitchell Trio, USA singer-songwriter John Denver decided to strike out on his own in the late 60s. Leaving On A Jet Plane, one of the songs he wrote for Peter, Paul & Mary, became an international mega-hit, but it wasn't until 1971's Poems, Prayers And Promises that Denver made his solo breakthrough. Despite critical brickbats, dismissing much of his work as saccharine and bland, Denver remained massively popular and scored a string of international hits including I'd Rather Be A Cowboy, Thank God I'm A Country Boy and the UK chart-topper, Annie's Song. His television appearances helped keep him popular among the public, and in his later years he was more dedicated to charitable work - particularly environmental causes. He was killed in a plane crash in 1997.
