Julie London was an American actress and singer who achieved great fame with her performance of Cry Me A River in the 1956 film The Girl Can't Help It. The single sold in excess of 1 million copies in 1955. London recorded some excellent albums throughout the remainder of the 50s, but although they sold respectably, they failed to match the success of Cry Me A River and the album that it appeared on, Julie Is Her Name. Her success as an actress continued for many years, as she went on to appear in more than 20 films, as well as in a number of television programmes. Her long-term smoking habit caught up with her when she suffered a stroke in 1995. She died five years later after a long period of poor health.
