American singer Lady Gaga shot to fame in the late 00s with her provocative blend of glam pop and urban beats. Her theatrical fashion sense was shaped by performance artist Lady Starlight, and after flirting with avant-electronica in her early stage performances she hit upon a goldmine when she began to focus on pop melodies. The singles Just Dance and Poker Face are irresistible glam pop stompers that topped the charts around the world. Her debut album The Fame repeated this success, selling more than 10 million copies internationally. She is currently one of the most successful musical acts in the world, and in May 2010 she was listed in Time magazine's annual list of the most influential people on the planet. Unlike many other pop icons, Lady Gaga has a wealth of genuine talent. She has played piano from the age of four, composes all her own songs, and has a flamboyant image that is the product of her own eccentricities, not a money-spinning marketing campaign.
