Mariah Carey is an American R&B singer who has also enjoyed success as a songwriter, producer and actress. Her staggering five-octave vocal range has helped give her an enduring and hugely successful career, especially during the 90s. After teaming up with producer Tommy Mottola, she recorded a demo, which quickly attracted a deal with Columbia Records. Carey’s self-titled debut was an immediate huge hit, spawning several chart-topping singles such as Vision Of Love and Love Takes Time, and staying at the top of the USA album chart for 22 weeks. It went on to sell 15 million copies and lay the foundations for an incredible decade for the singer, in which she’d record 15 number 1 singles and seven hugely successful albums. A move to Virgin Records at the turn of the millennium had a negative impact on the singer’s fortunes, and she even spent a spell in hospital as a result of exhaustion, but following the release of 2005’s The Emancipation Of Mimi she enjoyed a resurgence of interest. It was a massive international success, but the relatively poor sales of 2008’s E=MC² and 2009’s Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel suggests that Carey may not be able to live up to her 90s heyday.
