Mazzy Star formed in 1989, in Santa Monica, California, around the duo of David Roback and Hope Sandoval. The duo’s slow-paced acoustic-based music possesses a dreamy quality, largely due to Sandoval’s angelic, soothing vocals, hypnotic, reverberated guitar riffs, and distant-sounding, sparse pedal steel guitars. The pair's debut So Tonight That I Might See met with a muted response and the follow-up did not fare much better. The group has not released any new material since 1996, although Sandoval has released material under the moniker Hope Sandival The Warm Inventions and both have collaborated with numerous artists.
