Critically acclaimed USA trio Morphine formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1989, and received instant attention for an unconventional format and unusual sound. Based around a lead baritone saxophone, and a sliding bass with two strings, and the low crooning baritone vocals of lead singer Mark Sandman, the band’s dark, moody brand of low rock echoed strong jazz and blues influences. The group disbanded in 1999, after lead singer Mark Sandman suffered a heart attack whilst on stage at a festival in Italy, and was pronounced dead shortly after. A sad end to an original journey.
