The deeper you dig in a goldmine, the better the quality of the gold. This is R.E.M.’s secret gem, an album of rich songs that has been overlooked by the record-buying public at large. Low-key production, gentle themes and Michael Stipe’s crystal-clear vocals grace great compositions such as ‘E-Bow The Letter’, ‘Electrolite’, ‘So Fast, So Numb’ and the simple but glorious ‘Be Mine’. Like so much of the band’s work, there was virtually nothing to fault, even if, equally, there was nothing that was truly innovative. Many fans and critics struggled to warm to the record initially, but after years of reflection it's hidden depths have been gradually uncovered. It is now widely viewed as one the best R.E.M. albums.
