No Doubt formed in 1986 in Anaheim, California. They suffered an early trauma when original lead vocalist John Spence committed suicide, by shooting himself in an Anaheim park. Keyboardist Eric Stefani brought his sister Gwen into the band as lead singer, and they signed to Interscope Records some time later. Eric then left the band to pursue a career as an animator. The self-titled debut album received favourable reviews, but sold poorly. Grunge dominated the US music scene in 1992, and the emergence of No Doubt's upbeat, ska punk and new wave-influenced brand of pop was badly timed. The single Just A Girl became a hit in 1995, and the album Tragic Kingdom was propelled to the top of the charts by the radio friendly power ballad, Don't Speak, which reached number 1 in several countries around the world. Having come from nowhere, the album has now sold over 16 million copies worldwide. It took until 2000, to release a follow-up, and when it arrived it received generally poor reviews, and sold a fraction of its predecessor. 2001’s Rock Steady faired better, and produced a string of hit singles. The band embarked on a hiatus in 2004, with Stefani going on to pursue a successful solo career. She has also established herself as an actress. However, No Doubt announced they had re-formed in 2008. Stefani is married to Gavin Rossdale of Bush.
