Noah And The Whale formed in 2006 in Twickenham, London. It is one of the many bands to emerge in the new millennium that blends acoustic-based folk music with delicate, upbeat indie pop melodies. The group released the infectiously summery 5 Years Time as its debut single in 2007, although the song was not a hit until it was re-released the following year, when it reached number 7 in the UK. As a result, it received considerable airplay and helped the debut album reach number 5 in the UK charts. While the debut LP was a highly melodic, upbeat affair, the 2009 follow-up was a significantly more sombre effort. The songs were written following frontman Charlie Fink’s break-up with his former girlfriend, singer-songwriter Laura Marling (who regularly appeared live with the band in 2007 and 2008), and each track clearly portrayed a broken heart. However, it showed another dimension to the band and highlighted Fink’s talent as a songwriter of considerable depth. A robbery gained the band publicity in September 2009, when all of its equipment was stolen from a car park in Manchester, England. The collection included a drum kit, several amplifiers and a number of unique vintage guitars.
