On The Beach is one of Neil Young’s finest works, melodic, intense yet light, played exquisitely. Everything that some suggest Harvest lacks is present on this record. Young devotees read more into this album than the dark Tonight’s The Night, such as the spectre of Charles Manson in ‘Revolution Blues’. The real clincher is the autobiographical title track, with the simplistically powerful line ‘the world is turning, I hope it don’t turn away’.
