Pixies formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. They are one of the most important and influential US alternative rock acts of the modern era, and both Doolittle and Surfer Rosa regularly appear in lists of the best albums of all time. The band's sound is highly distinctive, blending punk influences with elements of folk and power pop, and with Black Francis' obscure, often incomprehensible, shouted lyrics. After five albums Francis announced that Pixies had split in 1993. Over the following years their influence became increasingly tangible. As each band member pursued their own various projects, the cult status grew and grew, fuelling rumours that were largely founded on hope that the Pixies were to reform. To the delight of alternative rock fans around the world, Francis finally confirmed a full Pixies reunion in 2003, starting with a successful world tour in 2004.
