There are many who consider Thompson to be the UK’s greatest living songwriter, which makes it all the more saddening that his work is not more widely known. Others recognise his fluidity as a master of the Fender Stratocaster. A key member of 60s folk rock pioneers Fairport Convention, Thompson’s subsequent recordings with his then-wife Linda, and as a solo artist, have established him as a rare talent and a guitarist with a staggering technical and emotional range. He has rarely deviated far from the folk rock sound, although there is the occasional foray into devil-may-care rock ‘n’ roll. A national treasure and a songwriting genius.
