Ride formed in 1988 in Oxford, England. With a full-on, wall-strippingly loud wave of distorted guitar noise, and powerful harmonies, the band quickly became associated with the UK ‘shoegazing’ scene, although it was distinguished from its contemporaries by a greater emphasis on melody. As a result, Ride enjoyed both strong critical and commercial success in the early to mid-90s. With two good albums under its belt, the band became a little more indulgent and the resulting Carnival Of Light was largely panned by the critics. Having moved towards a more conventional rock sound, the band broke up in 1996. Andy Bell then joined Hurricane #1, before joining the new-look Oasis in 1999.
