Former members of the harmony pop group, Jay And The Americans, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen formed the legendary Steely Dan, recruiting a team of superb musicians to deliver their magnificent debut, 1972's Can't Buy A Thrill, which allied pin-sharp jazz rock, to acidic lyrics and spawned the infectious singles Do It Again, and Reelin' In The Years. By the mid-70s Steely Dan had become less of a touring band, and more of a studio project. Their painstakingly meticulous approach reached its apogee with the 1977 masterpiece, Aja, which featured contributions from a stellar cast of jazz musicians including Joe Sample, Larry Carlton and Wayne Shorter. After the slightly sterile 1980 follow-up, Gaucho, Becker and Fagen called time on the band. They collaborated sporadically on each others solo projects before reviving Steely Dan in the 00s, releasing two outstanding albums and touring regularly throughout the decade.
