Stephen Stills is technically one of the best guitarists of the rock era; a master of the Dreadnought Martin acoustic, and a songwriter of the highest order. He made his name as a member of the legendary Buffalo Springfield. When they broke up in 1968, he formed the now-legendary supergroup Crosby Stills And Nash. He released his magnificent self-titled debut album in 1970. It sold well, reaching number 3 in the USA, and was critically lauded. It is now considered a true classic, and continues to inspire younger generations. Several more outstanding albums came over the following years, including two albums with the short-lived Manassas. However, by the late 70s he appeared to have run out of inspiration, and the quality of his music suffered. Right By You in 1984 was a drastic change in style, as he adopted a slick, AOR-style sound. Since then he has released new material only occasionally, and sporadically works with Crosby and Nash. His 2005 comeback album, Man Alive! sold poorly, but for fans and critics it marked an astonishing return, and his best album since the mid-70s. He suffered ill-health in 2007 yet continues to tour regularly. Often in the shadow of his long-time musical sparring partner Neil Young, Stills remains the definitive musician’s musician.
