System Of A Down formed in 1994 in Los Angeles but it would be another four years before they would release their first self-titled debut studio album through American Recordings. The album was an outstanding success, the band's blend of alternative, heavy and experimental styles and drop-C tuning and growling/screaming vocals creating an intoxicating and addictive sound. System's sound typically includes the use of instruments such as electric mandolins, ouds, sitars and various forms of guitars like baritone electric, acoustic and 12-string guitars. Lyrically, System are highly political, their songs covering such topics as the Armenian Genocide of 1915 by the Ottoman Empire, the US Government's War on Terror, the US Prison System, Depression, love, insecurity, revenge, sex, corruption, war, death, religion, drugs, censorship, mind control and commercialism. These are themes that hold true to the band's personal beliefs; System is a part of the Axis of Justice, formed by Serj Tankian and Tom Morello. The organisation is non-profit, and designed to allow musicians, music fans, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice. System Of A Down has released five albums to date, all of which have achieved mainstream success. System has been nominated for three Grammy awards and has won one. The band is on hiatus as of 2006, as Serj Tankian is developing a solo career. Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan have started Scars On Broadway and Shavo is working with the Wu-Tang clan's RZA in Achozen.
