Formed in 1997 by Carl Barât, few bands in the new millennium have received as much press as The Libertines. Emerging from London at the height of the garage rock revival of the early 00s, their sound brought to the genre strong influences from the British punk groups of the late 70s and early 80s. Their laddish anthems and charming melodies possessed a distinctive chaotic edge, which won them a fiercely loyal fanbase, and influenced many new bands. Despite their second album, The Libertines being voted second best album of the year by NME magazine in December 2004, the band split had already occurred following internal problems, (not least that of Doherty’s much publicized drug dependancy), with Doherty and Barât going on to form Babyshambles and Dirty Pretty Things respectively.
