Smashing Pumpkins formed in 1988 in Chicago, Illinois. They are one of the 90s defining bands, having emerged during the grunge era early in the decade with a truly distinctive sound. Fusing classic rock, post-punk, shoegaze, heavy metal and alternative rock, their music can be dark and moody, or melodic and uplifting. Billy Corgan's powerful, evil-sounding vocals have always been at the forefront of their sound, whilst James Iha's phenomenal guitar work helped establish his reputation as one of the best rock guitarists of the modern era. They broke into the mainstream with their highly acclaimed second album, Siamese Dream, which reached the Top 10 in the USA and the Top 5 in the UK. Corgan then disappeared for a year to concentrate on composing his most ambitious project, the double album Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. The results were sensational, and the album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Their next album, Adore, was well received, but failed to sell in the same quantities as its predecessor. It contained a more electronic-based sound to any of their previous material. The disappointing MACHINA/The Machines Of God and MACHINA II/The Friends And Enemies Of Modern Music, both released in 2000, were to be their final albums before breaking up. The members went on to pursue various other musical projects, before Corgan announced in 2006 that The Pumpkins would be re-forming. Their line-up has been subject to many changes, with members such as Darcy Wretzky and Jimmy Chamberlain struggling with drug problems. Corgan is now the band's only remaining original member, with Chamberlain departing in 2009, and Iha opting to focus on other projects, rather than be part of the re-formed outfit. They have sold in excess of 20 million records worldwide.
