Although The Stranglers were ostensibly part of England's late 70s punk explosion, they were older and more experienced than most of the early punk bands, and their sound - while full of attitude and energy - was more musically sophisticated, bearing the distinct influence of 60s psychedelia. Although guitarist Hugh Cornwell and bassist J.J. Burnel shared vocals and songwriting, Cornwell was the driving force, and when he left the band in 1990, it meant a drastic change for The Stranglers, who went through a couple of Cornwell replacements over the years. Meanwhile, Cornwell carried on a long, fruitful solo career.
