For many years this was the critics’ favourite. The cognoscenti loved its rawness and the depression the album both portrayed and induced. The title track chronicles roadie Bruce Berry and Crazy Horse member Danny Whitten’s deaths. Other songs address the fact that Neil Young was not a happy bunny at this time in his life. The sloppy piano and most guitar parts are played by Nils Lofgren. The bar-room atmosphere has been repeated on many Young albums over the years, but never as home-grown as this. Of all the excellent records Young has made, this is definitely not the one for sunny Sunday mornings.
